Tones and I sold out Showbox Market Review

The multi-talented singer-songwriter Tones and I was in Seattle for her first ever performance in our town. This was only her second show of her US tour which has been selling out in most cities after the success of her number one hit “Dance Monkey,” hit the airwaves. The young Australian artist has come a long way from her basking days proving that once more, anything can happen.

Her 11 song setlist included songs from her first EP, The Kids Are Coming, along with a very unique cover of “Forever Young,” a track she played in her early days. The stage was completely empty with only her keyboards in the front center and a large banner that had The Kids Are Coming written all over it. The adoring fans didn’t need much more than that showing their undivided attention to the performer and cheering her on at all times.

She came to the stage wearing pink socks and a pink beanie over a white baseball cap and an olive Air Jordan jumper suit. She smiled most of the night still in disbelief that her life has changed so drastically and thanking her fans for their support. Most of the time she stopped between the songs and narrated a story about them before playing them which was a nice way to make the show very intimate.

The most memorable moment for me was before going into “Johnny Run Away,” she mentioned that she wrote it for her friend who came out to his parents at a young age and it did not go well. That young man was there tonight and she brought him onstage as we all cheered him on. Sometimes things change so drastically and who knew that his friend would be the top artist right now.

Tones was full of energy jumping between the two sides of the stage singing to her fans making sure everyone was having a good time. Before her two last songs she shared that the next tune was inspired by a night she was out at a talent show and someone performed a dance hit that everyone immediately got up for and danced. She wanted to write something that made people move, shed didn’t know that it would be #1 in the world.

Then started to play “Dance Monkey” and the whole venue echoed from voices as everyone sang along to the tune. This is a song that does make you want to move and she really accomplished that goal. Everyone is dancing to it right now. We even spotted Macklemore in the audience who came out to the concert to show his support as a fan.
