Sunflower Bean at the Crocodile

We headed to the Crocodile to catch Sunflower Bean along with Palehound and Liily feeling excited. We had only seen Sunflower Bean a few years back when they opened for Interpol at the beautiful Moore Theater. The band consisting of Julia Cumming (bass, lead vocals), Nick Kivlen (guitars, backing vocals), and Olive Faber (drums), were touring in support of their most recent album Headful of Sugar.

First up was Liily and I’m not sure if it’s a product of the pandemic but tonight’s show was barely at half capacity (if that). Unfortunately for the late crowd, they sure missed a real banger, we really enjoyed this set. If this was you, do yourself and your ears a favor and check out Liily. Now.

These guys played an electric performance complete with crashing drums, wailing guitar riffs and aggressive vocals by front man Dylan Nash-all of it swirling together in the kind of chaos that makes you want to mosh. Their set featured a good portion of tracks from their debut full length album TV Or Not TV and even threw in a cover of “Teenage Wasteland” by The Who. All in all, definite must-see if you have a chance to catch a live show.

Palehound took the stage as the second opener and kicked off the middle portion of the show with a fun setlist of songs. Palehound’s bedroom pop indie sound was a stark contrast from Liily but offered no less applause and love from the audience. Their set offered up a number of playful jams and gentle vocals. The band concluded their set with a surprise happy birthday cheer for Ellen Kempner (happy birthday Ellen!) Good vibes all around.

It was time for the main act noting that this was the second to last night of Sunflower Bean’s “Headful of Sugar” tour. Their setlist included songs comprised almost entirely off the new album including some special throwbacks such as the always dreamy “Easier Said” from their 2016 album, Human Ceremony. It’s always good to see a band evolve and they for sure since the last time we saw them. More sure of themselves and even a stronger live performance. Cumming is a fierce front woman who is constantly engaging with the crowd and keeping their attention. The band will be back in town November with Peach Pit.
