Planes on Paper at the Crocodile
Local favorites Planes on Paper started the night as a 6 piece band including Sam Watts joining them behind the drums. Navid Eliot and Jen Borst are in perfect sync from the first moment they take the stage, always complimenting each other in forming the best harmonies together. Their indie songs are crafted in perfect layers of delicate yet powerful lyrics and sounds.
Eliot chatted a few times with the audience as he recognized a lot of faces looking up at him, including his mother. “Happy Birthday Mom!”, he called out, followed by “I usually say direct all complaints to Jen but tonight my mom is here so direct them to her”. Along with their wonderful tunes the band also covered “Ordinary Love”, which was a delight. This was my first time seeing the band but it will not be the last, I really enjoyed their set.
A little after Watts took the stage with the rest of his band this time holding a guitar and taking the lead. The event was also the band’s album release for Night Repairs, the follow up to 2011’s From A Spark. Ghosts I’ve Met was originally formed by Watts along with Ben Blankenship and Brent Arnold both of Modest Mouse.
When I was checking out their tour dates I really laughed at every event because it read Ghosts I’ve Met at (venue name). I thought it was funny that it read that way which made it really catchy. The group played songs from their prior releases as well as new songs from album out today. Sam mentioned that he wrote Payphone Patience when he was 21, and when he did payphones actually existed. The night ended with an acoustic solo performance of “Night Repairs”, leaving us wanting more after a delightful set.
