My Morning Jacket at Chateau Ste. Michelle
The Church of Jim James rolled through Woodinville last Saturday, converting weirdos and winos alike at Chateau Ste. Michelle. My Morning Jacket, the Kentucky-based psych rock jam band is known for their eclectic following, and this weekend’s crowd was no exception. Surrounded by sequins, glitter, and a whole lot of rosé, I praised the church of Jacket as I drank the Holy Blood (wine).

My Morning Jacket (MMJ) is currently on tour in support of their 10th studio album. The record, simply titled Is, consists of 10 eclectic tracks. Much like their live show, it’s upbeat, energetic, and cohesive. Their Chateau Ste. Michelle setlist included “Is” as well as classic crowd pleasers for a total of 21 songs. Jacket’s genre can be tough to narrow down. When a band has the ability (and desire) to do it all, why wouldn’t you?

The band looked just as good as they sounded. Lighting designer Marc Janowitz elevated MMJ’s set to the next level by visually narrating the journey. Janowitz, who has been with the band since the mid-2000’s, is known for creating a scene. Previously a designer for The Blue Man Group, his intricate attention to detail shines through spots, washes, beams, strobes, and asymmetry galore. Strong lighting can turn a show into a spectacle, and Janowitz accomplished that and more.

This was my first time at Chateau Ste. Michelle. The show started at 6pm, which I later realized was timed perfectly for golden hour. As the sun went down, Jacket went up – ending their performance on an epic encore high note beneath a starry sky. While I can’t help but imagine what a theatre show might look like, I have a feeling MMJ will forever be enjoyed best outside.
My Morning Jacket is on tour through the end of October. When they inevitably return to Seattle, I hope you have your sequins ready.
