Justice dazzle WAMU Theater in Seattle

Veteran electronic music duo Justice were in Seattle and turned the WaMu Theater into a 2000’s type rave. The French DJs are responsible for creating some of the most influential edm samples to come out of the 2000’s. They’ve kept up on their wave, Kaytranada recently remixed their recent single ” Neverender” which features Tame Impala. Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé are back after a four-year hiatus with their fourth record Hyperdrama featuring talent such as Tame Impala, Thundercat, Miguel, Rimon and The Flints. They emulate experience through all of their production be it visual, audio or mood making for an immersive experience.

Justice stands out against mainstream electronic music artists in how they mix their tracks. The duo doesn’t make you wait for the song to pick up and predictable drops. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but my ideas were more along the lines of American rave culture which was thankfully not the case. Even though their production is calculated, the set maintained groove heavy, with lots of slap bass and stringed instrument additions. Crowd was very millennial, vibes were high, outfits were colorful.

Their lighting design and production was the cherry on top that brought the set to life. The duo is known for having their large illuminated cross onstage and on this tour, we got to see it lit above them as a part of their design. I loved how Hyperdrama was sampled in different, older pieces of work in a fashion that ties the set together. As Gen Z, this feels like the closest I’ll get to indie sleaze era or a late 2000’s rave. We may not be able to see Daft Punk in concert any time soon, but Justice remains.
