Joey Valence & Brae – Hyperyouth Takeover
Joey Valence & Brae are a duo you may or may not be familiar with. If not, you’re certainly missing out. The punk rock duo emerged on the scene in 2021 and exploded into popularity in 2022 with their hit “Punk Tactics.” With this release, the duo cemented themselves as the next heads of rap-rock. Joey and Brae met in college and started producing songs together. Now, they’re on the world tour supporting their album, Hyperyouth, a chaotic mix of punk, rap, rock, and combining samples of classic 90’s hits. The record also features artists like JPEGMAFIA, Rebecca Black, and TiaCorine. The album tour came to The Showbox, selling out one of Seattle’s most iconic venues.

AG Club opened up for the start of the night. Bringing classic rap elements to the forefront with modern and retro sounds. The duo was constantly moving, jumping down next to the other photographers in the pit to get to the barricade and standing for the audience. Getting everyone hyped up and causing the pit to get rowdy early on. AG Club kept the crowd work up, getting close and personal with fans and taking brief moments to say hi, high five, and interact with the crowd. They clearly shared the same love for JVB that the audience had and were there to participate in the fun.

Much like the start of Hyperyouth, the duo walked out to the sounds of their audience cheering “J V B… J V B…J V B”. Joey and Brae had no holds barred as the duo went full force into the first song. What could be comparable to a workout for some, was the two simply getting started. JVB for me is what I feel like experiencing the Beastie Boys in their prime. Loud, chaotic, raw, and Mach speed 24/7.

The crowd was so filled with energy from the night that there were two times in the pit, during “Hooligang” and “Give It To Me,” when the audience was bouncing up and down in unison so hard it felt as if the floorboards were going to give way. The dip was so significant that it caused me to fall and crack my camera monitor (worth it). The duo had almost no pauses for the night, playing most songs back-to-back and keeping the energy going.
If you missed Joey and Brae this go around, you definitely want to keep them on your watchlist for their next tour. I have a strong feeling that the energy will be outmatched the next time the duo comes to the Emerald City.
