black midi at the Neptune Theater
Last week, London-based rock band black midi graced The Neptune Theater. They put on such a
captivating performance that I completely forgot my photo assignment at hand for a minute and instead caught myself watching the band with my camera by my side a few too many times. The night kicked off with Injury Reserve who released their latest, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, last year. They were electric and very enjoyable to watch for the first time.
From the minute the quartet took the stage (in a conga line with saxophonist, Kaidi Akinnibi, leading the way with a boat steering wheel) it was evident that their stage presence was going to enhance their already stellar lineup of songs. The band was touring in support of their new album, Cavalcade, their second release which came out in December. The eight-song, 40 minute album is an enjoyably abrasive experience that includes sounds from shrill violin all the way to smooth saxophone.
Their music carries such bountiful energy which translates perfectly to their bouncy performance. The almost constant presence of a saxophone is a unique attribute for a post-punk band. But that’s part of what makes black midi so watchable.
