Jorja Smith at the Paramount Theater
The West England born singer/songwriter/rapper Jorja Smith graced The Paramount while on tour promoting her new album Falling or Flying. I have been a fan since her critically acclaimed debut Lost and Found, an album without features that attesting to her genuinely sourced artistry. Her performance, the culmination of years practicing her craft since the early ag of 11. Smith rose to recognition after a cover of Labrinth‘s “Earthquake” caught the attention of producer Gary Moot. Smith has managed to keep her momentum going, collaborating with the likes of AJ Tracey, Lila Ike, Major League DJs and Burna Boy. Samples of her songs being popular choice by EDM Djs of all types, often being meshed harmoniously with Afro-Caribbean elements.

Smith is comfortable on stage and exudes an effortless talent, her groove is simple and understated. She shares a simple stage arrangement with her instrumentalists, serenading us while basking in and orange hued spotlight. The most memorable moment being her acoustic ballad “Too many times,” the screeching of the guitar strings decorating her vocals with a vulnerable rawness. Strength with soft edges, her stripped down approach to performance reincarnates 90’s neo soul styles. She makes beautifully, vulnerable music that easily ensnares the crowd. Palpable drum beats Afro-Caribbean style drumbeats pulse through her songs, giving them a soul. Beats thundering on the expansive drum kit, dub style bass.

When I hear Jorja sing, I hear influences of Amy Winehouse and Adele. It was refreshing to go to a more traditional performance, in a more traditional theatre venue like The Paramount.
