Squid and Deliluh at the Crocodile
“The Croc is hot.” That’s what my friends and I would always say about the old Crocodile location on 2nd Avenue, and the new location is no different. My first trip to the new 1st avenue location was to see Squid, a UK band from Brighton, who released their debut LP, Bright Green Field, last April. They were supported by Toronto-based duo (though the band has also performed as a quartet), Deliluh. Their latest release, Beneath the Floors, came out in 2019.
Squid’s hour-long set didn’t feel like enough time with them but was incredibly rich with experimental post-punk songs. Each track flowed smoothly into the next with an abrasively beautiful, cohesive sound. It was a relatively music-heavy night with very limited banter (none, in fact, on Deliluh’s part). Though limited, the comments from lead vocalist and drummer Ollie Judge were very charming and included remarks about Night at the Museum 2 being a great movie. Explosively energetic Judge kept the crowd swaying (because even when surrounded by explosive energy, Seattle doesn’t dance) and made me incredibly thankful for the rise in British post-punk that has become increasingly prevalent. Though it was a work night and staying out past 9 PM usually fills me with anxiety, I was absolutely thrilled to stay through the end of Squid’s set to see their entire set run its course, and I was not disappointed. Squid is the US through the end of March so if you’re near make sure to catch them perform.
