Valley at Showbox Market Seattle

Valley were in town touring in support of their fourth record, Water the Flowers, Pray for a Garden. The Canadian indie-pop band currently consists of lead vocalist Rob Laska, bassist Alex Dimauro, and drummer Karah James. The Showbox Market filled up with Val Pals (what their fans are called), there to hear some older favorites and new tracks.

The stage was a simple set up with a banner in the background mirroring their latest album’s artwork, a valley. The band took the stage and played the title track off their new record following with “Bass Player’s Brother,” and “Lost In Translation.” Valley having lost a band member this year have been going through some changes and figuring things out with new dynamics.

Dimauro asked how everyone was doing and ensured that tonight was going to be a good show. He introduced “A Little More,” saying that it was about the band falling in love again with their new form and the music. James‘ drums were set up to the side and made the four-piece band feel more open and visible at all times. It was actually nice to see the drummer in the front and be able to get some photos of her.

James did also switch out with their guitarist on a couple songs and came to the front to play “Mosquito,” and “Let It Rain.” Before starting the songs, it was nice to see her hug the rest of the members while standing up to play the guitar on the songs. She also talked about their day and how Dimauro bought a TV for the bus since they now had a videogame console.

The band mentioned that they were in the same venue almost a year ago and it means a lot to return and have fans show up. A lot can change in a year, and the album is about those changes in the band and in their lives. The next song was the first one they wrote for the album called, “Let It Rain.” Laska sat on the piano for this one as James played the guitar. This was a highlight of the night seeing the members so open and vulnerable. Reflecting on their journey, Laska mentioned the significance of the room they were in, as it was the last place they played before taking a break last year.

The band had a lot of energy and transmitted that to the audience creating a great concert experience. Each member brought their unique talent and formed one piece to play their songs. We can see why people are into them especially with the latest release. It seems like it’s been a hard year for them but playing to their fans makes it all worth it. Fun band to see live with catchy tunes.
