Jungle Bring Volcano to WaMu Theater
Well friends, they’ve done it again. Jungle returns to Seattle with another stunning performance in support of their latest album, Volcano. If you’re not familiar (if not, why aren’t you?), Jungle is a London based Neo-soul outfit composed of main members Tom McFarland and Josh Lloyd Watson. Their style takes inspiration from soul melodies and blends them with fresh dance rhythms and beats for a unique sound and groove full of funk and pop stylings.
The show kicked off with a dramatic curtain drop as the group took their positions silhouetted against the stage strobes. Immediately the opening beats for “Us Against the World,” began pumping through the speakers to the roar of the audience’s applause. Backup vocalist, Lydia Kitto really shines in this track, her powerful, yet warm vocals pierce through the beat. Could listen to Kitto’s vocals on repeat forever, 100%.
The setlist featured all the dance-y bangers from Volcano, like “Back on 74,” and “Candle Flame,” the latter of which features a rap track from UK artist, Erick the Architect. Speaking of guest vocals, if you’ve spent any time with the new album, you’ll hear some lines from Channel Tres on “I’ve Been In Love”. While he wasn’t present for the live show, the LCD visuals featuring the rapper were still appreciated. It might be noted here that Volcano’s brief incorporation of hip hop / rap is a somewhat new addition to their arsenal of sounds. It adds a fun element to an already amazing sound.
The band also served up a heavy peppering of best-of tracks from previous albums as well. Judging from the crowd’s response, fan favorites were songs like “Heavy California,” “Keep Moving,” and the ultimate dance number “Busy Earnin,” as one of the closing tracks. Perfection. Whether you are a long-time listener or just getting into the Jungle groove, this is one show you should not miss.
