Grace Mitchell and St.Lucia play the Market

I made sure I showed up early to tonight’s show at the Showbox Market to catch opener Grace Mitchell. She is quickly moving up in the music circles impressing everyone who gets a chance to see her live. At only 18 she has already been part of St.Lucia and Joywave’s tour and has opened for the likes of The Weeknd, as well as having her cover of “Maneater” appear on a movie soundtrack.

Her “Raceday” EP includes “Jitter” and “NoLo” which is making its rounds on the radio wave. When Grace took the stage she transmitted a sense of confidence and pure ownership. It wasn’t as she was the opener it seemed that she was the main act. I was surprised to see such presence by a young artist but I believe this is what makes her stand out. She radiated through her curly locks and made everyone around feel that this was big. I’m keeping my eyes out for her as she’s a good one.

When it was time for St.Lucia to start their set I noticed that their production was not anything large but really nicely setup and to the point of the esthetic the band embraces. You could be in the 80s tonight without even trying to do so. They all wear clothes that are airy and maybe would find in a Howard Hughues movie giving the show a great feel that ties so well with their sound.

Jean-Philip Grobler is smooth vocals and reminiscent sound provide you with a great soundtrack to dance your way through the whole night. After his debut album in 2013 “When the Night” was released by Neon Gold Records he added himself to the map with his 80s pop sound that was missing from our lives. I like the fact that you can clearly hear his influence of that era but he’s found a way to make it his own without sounding like he’s repeating it. The release of his second album in January “Matter” brought him into more mainstream success and I only see him rising higher this year.
