Bishop Briggs and MisterWives ‘Don’t Look Down’ Concert
We headed to the Showbox SoDo to catch one of the most anticipated, co-headlining tours this month. Bishop Briggs and MisterWives have embarked on their Don’t Look Down tour and tonight and SoDo would be the final show of the tour. We were thrilled to catch tonight’s set as it’s been a minute since we’ve seen Bishop Briggs and the first time catching MisterWives. Bishop released an EP, When Everything Went Dark, this summer and MisterWives released their fourth record, Nosebleeds. Both have been playing on our Spotify playlist.
The night kicked off with the TikTok sensation Natalie Jane, who from the very beginning was ready to give us a good show. During her quick set she actually covered Gnarles Barkley‘s “Crazy,” one of our favorite songs and she actually did a very good job at it. Probably the most excitement came from her last tune when she asked the crowd if they actually knew who Ava was, she even had merch shirts with the phrase ‘Who the F is Ava?’ This was pretty cool as she played the tune, and everyone sang along. We’re actually very interested in seeing how this young star will change the industry.
After a short set up break, it was time for Bishop Briggs to take the floor. The only bad thing was that the stage at the Showbox probably was not big enough for their large screen monitors, and seemed a little crammed and probably would be much better in a larger space. Of course, I didn’t stop it from looking absolutely cool when it lit up. As Bishop walked to the floor the video for “Art of Survival” was playing in the back lighting up the room with the black-and-white display. Briggs was all smiles as she looked at her crowd, feeling the love and affection and of course, giving it back to everyone in her own way. She stopped to thank everyone for being there and to say how good she felt to be back on stage and how good this tour has been and that she couldn’t believe that this was actually the last night.
Briggs went on to introduce the next song that she wrote with her best friend KFlay, another one of our favorite artists, sharing her experience from a bad boyfriend always texting her back on her show days and never actually being there for her in between. Bishop said, ‘This is bad as you all know it and you deserve the best and you should know that and if you’re looking for a sign this is it, I am telling you deserve better.’ She went on to play” My Shine.”
Then shortly after that, they set up a little acoustic set where it was just Briggs and her guitarist and played “The Way I Do.” After that a fan actually threw a letter on stage and she actually picked it up and opened it and it looked like it was pretty long, so she said, ‘I’m gonna say what really got off looking at this pretty quickly as the rest looks personal and I don’t want to share it all. What I’m getting from this Is You MATTER!’ And everyone clapped, in an emotional moment.
After that she went on with “Tattooed on My Heart,” and “superhuman,” where the end of that video had her holding her baby son and she got closer and closer to the monitor and pretended to kiss the screen behind her, showing her loving mother side as new mother now. Briggs’ voice is so powerful, standing in the crowd it feels like it’s piercing through your soul vibrating all the emotions you’ve been holding onto and breaking every barrier in order to feel them.
Briggs also revisited her first record, Church of Scars, with songs “Hallowed Ground,” “White Flag,” and “Hi-Lo.” After that she stopped and chatted with a young fan, Lilly, who was actually there for their first concert, and she signed their hat. We absolutely love seeing her interact with people in the room as she’s so genuine and loving as a person. After that Bishop got a little more personal sharing that she had a few gifts this year and one of them was being on The Masked Singer as “Medusa”. She called these gifts sent from her sister Kate McLaughlin, who died of ovarian cancer in January 2021. She won the contest making her the first British and international singer to win and the youngest in the show’s history.
Briggs covered Hozier‘s “Take Me to Church,” after that leaving everyone in awe of her voice. Her set ended with her mega head “River” which lately got a lot of heat again due to P!nk covering it on her latest tour. This song is so timeless you just can sing it and sing it again. She’s an absolutely gem and we never miss an opportunity to see her live.
After a short break it was time for MisterWives to take the stage and as we all focused on the band coming to the floor dressed in black and white with a black tie, lead singer Mandy Lee stood on top of the screen monitors, for their first track, “Out of Your Mind.” I guess another moment that would look cool in a much taller venue, but it was still a good moment and a strong way to enter. Even after she returned to the floor, I don’t think Lee stopped for a single second of their set. She was absolutely energized, and moving around constantly almost as she was flying across the stage.
After a few songs, Lee stopped to say thank you to the fans. ‘It’s been an amazing tour, and we can’t believe this is the last night, we’re going to keep playing some songs off our new record, which is a direct response to the brutal hits of life, if you know what I mean. We learned to get comfortable with the uncomfortable and we made the rawest record since we’ve started 10 years ago. Thank you so much for sticking with us on this one as it was a little different than the rest of our work.’ They went on to play “Trip Around The Sun.”
For their track, “Ultraviolet,” Lee performed standing at the monitors again and from the distance you could see that three arrows were on her back as she had been shot, perhaps by love? The band ended the night with the title track of their latest record “Nosebleeds”, and after that Bishop and Natalie Jane join them on stage for one final bow for the tour.
This was an incredible night. All artists were superb, and we had the right mix of emotions and excitement on the floor. It was the first time for MisterWives but it won’t be the last. They were really good and of course Bishop Briggs always is a highlight of the year.
